EXPANSION OF GAS

You could do a simple demo to show that gas expands as you heat it.  If a substance is heated, the molecules in that substance start to move and soon take up more space – IT EXPANDS.

Activity
  1. Prepare a gas flask with a rubber bung and glass tube.
  2. Dip the end of the tube in a beaker of water.
  3. Warm the flask by rubbing it with your hands or you may use other source of heat to speed up the process.
Observation

What do you see?
What do you think is expanding?
Do gases expand more than liquids?
What happens when you take your hands off and wait for the flask to cool
down?

Assessment

Explain how the concept of expansion affects the building designs and
bridges.
